Gift Of Life Organ & Tissue Donation
The Schuylkill County Coroner's Office works closely with the Gift of Life Organ & Tissue Donation program as well as the
Lions Eye Bank to ensure the decedent's organ donation wishes are fulfilled. Organ and/or tissue donation is possible in
most cases, though there are circumstances in which organ donation is denied by the Coroner's Office for investigation
and evidentiary reasons, including but not limited to forensic autopsy. All arrangements for specific organ and tissue
donation are handled through the Gift of Life Program. Please contact the Gift of Life to arrange for Donation. Gift of
Life will contact the Coroner's Office to inform us of the request for donation. In most cases, donation can happen
locally within Schuylkill County at one of the local Hospitals.

Virtual Autopsy  | Utilizing Modern Medicine to Aid Forensic Death Investigation
Adopted in 2012, the Virtual Autopsy is the keystone of the Coroner's Office efforts to modernize death investigations in
Schuylkill County. To date, the Schuylkill County Coroner's Office has performed over 1,000 such Virtual Autopsies. A
Virtual Autopsy is performed utilizing a CT Machine, whereby images are then interpreted by a physician familiar with CT
interpretation and protocol. During this time, the deceased person is not disturbed as invasively as he or she would be in
a traditional autopsy. The results are then interpreted and a Cause and Manner of Death is able to be determined in most
cases. In cases where Virtual Autopsy cannot aid in determination of Cause or Manner of death, traditional autopsy may be
ordered by the Coroner.

Essentially, Virtual Autopsy is the cutting-edge of forensic medicine, without the cutting! The non-invasive nature of
Virtual Autopsy has provided comfort to families in knowing that determination of cause and manner of death can be made
without an otherwise majorly invasive autopsy.

Mobile Morgue  |  Mass Casuality Response
Dr. David Moylan designed the Mobile Morgue which features a full autopsy suite as well
as storage areas. The Mobile Morgue is an outfitted trailer, which can become mobile if
needed. The advantages of having a Mobile Morgue include the ability to respond to mass
casualty incidents if needed. The outfitting of the trailer was performed at no charge to
the taxpayers of Schuylkill County.

Mortuary Refrigerator
The latest addition to the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office is a cold storage mortuary
which is in close proximity to the mobile morgue. Again with no expense to the taxpayer,
this new addition gives the office the ability to accommodate more decedents at any given time.
This addition to the office also saves taxpayers and family members money by eliminating the
need to transport the deceased to either Allentown or Reading plus other fees charged by the
hospital.

Electronic Records | eCedent | Forensic Filer
The Schuylkill County Coroner's Office modernized its record keeping by utilizing the eCedent
program. This initiative allowed for a complete, electronic death investigation record as well as
the ability to eFile Death Certificates to the decedent's Funeral Home of choice. The eCedent program
company has went out of business as of 2017. Since then all records have been converted to a new
program called Forensic Filer.
